Allison Bickett, PhD
Council - 1st Term
Allison Bickett is a member of the 4th generation to be born and raised in Boyd Cove, Lake Wylie, Charlotte, North Carolina. She and her husband Jonathan (3rd generation in “The Cove”) are raising a pretty fantastic 5-year-old river rat named Clara. The entire family finds their therapy through skiing, sailing and fishing in those waters.
She earned a Master’s Degree in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience and a PhD in Clinical Health Psychology, and presently serves as the Director of Behavioral Medicine Education in the Department of Family Medicine at Atrium Health. Facilitating Balint groups in this residency was the catalyst for her involvement with the ABS; both implicitly and explicitly groomed for Balint facilitation by Dr. Mary Hall, one of the early and loyal members of the ABS. She led groups for 10 years before (finally) achieving the professional goal of credentialed Balint leader and ABS council member. She considers it a privilege to bring Balint to those who have not previously experienced it, including behavioral medicine faculty and physicians across disciplines. She and Dr. Hall have partnered with a regional art museum to pair art analysis with Balint groups for practicing physicians, Advance Practice Providers, residents and medical students in all departments of their organization. The people and practice of Balint have served as both an anchor and a mechanism for expansion of her mind and heart, and she considers it an absolute honor to serve the ABS in this role.
