José Niño, MD

Council - 2nd Term
2017 -2021

Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, José earned his M.D. degree from The Colombian School of Medicine in 1992. In 1998, he moved to Chicago to earn his graduate degree in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University. Between 1993 and 1998, José spent time in India at the Bihar School of Yoga studying yoga and Ayurveda.

Since 2007, as the behavioral scientist for the family medicine residency program at AMITA Health SMEMC in Chicago, José has been leading Balint groups for resident physicians. He participated in his first IBS meeting in 2008 and his first ABS intensive in 2009. In 2017 he completed his ABS Balint Group Leader Education Fellowship and is currently a candidate for credentialing as Balint leader by the ABS.

José fell in love with Balint groups when he first participated in the ABS workshops at the Forum for Behavioral Science in Family Medicine in Chicago. The experience was a true “aha!” moment. He describes training and participating in Balint groups as a unique way one can learn about the clinician–patient collaboration. Balint groups, he shares, “allow one to embody the patient’s and the clinician’s experience, living through their therapeutic relationship with supportive colleagues, not theoretically, but experientially.

José lives in Evanston, Illinois with his wife Rebecca and his two children Isabel Francesca and Oliver Javier. Jose and his wife are also partners professionally, as they both practice as LCPCs in their private practice in Lincolnwood, Illinois.
