Balint Leader Intensive Training

Held twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, these four day workshops are designed for medical educators who use, or plan to use, Balint groups in their teaching about the doctor-patient relationship or for others who work with practicing physician groups. Intensives offer practical, experiential learning; providing Balint group work, discussion topic sessions, didactic presentations, videotape review and written material. Each Balint group is led by two faculty, who are Credentialed Balint Group Leaders. Each group conducts eight or nine sessions and debriefs them, with opportunities for participants to lead or co-lead sessions and receive feedback. The Balint Leader Intensive is both a method for learning the skills of Balint group leadership and the mechanism by which candidates for credentialing co-lead Balint groups and have their leadership evaluated by faculty for credentialing.

Balint Leader Supervision for Credentialing

In most cases, supervision of a candidate’s Balint group leadership is required at least six times a year for two years, as preparation to be considered for credentialing. The American Balint Society has a list of approved Balint group leader supervisors who can provide this supervision. A standard fee is set each year for these supervision sessions, paid to the American Balint Society. Taped or transcribed reports of the leader’s Balint group sessions must be presented for at least some of the supervision sessions. Following each session, the supervisor creates a written report documenting assessment and progress of the candidate on a standard form. Detailed information on Balint leader supervision is available on the credentialing information page.
