A supervisor or supervisee pair who reach an impasse and wish to terminate their supervision relationship will first contact the Coordinator of Supervision who will attempt to help the pair resolve their impasse.
If the pair cannot resolve their impasse with the help of the Coordinator of Supervision to the satisfaction of both parties, the dispute will go to the Credentialing Coordinating Committee for deliberation. The Credentialing Coordinating Committee may request information from the supervisor in order to consider its decision, but the supervisor may not be “present” in discussion with the Credentialing Coordinating Committee when it is making its decision. If a supervisor is a member of the Credentialing Coordinating Committee, he/she must excuse themselves from the committee call for the portion during which his/her situation is discussed and decided. The Credentialing Committee may request consultation from a second supervisor; recommend dissolution of the supervisory relationship with a shift to another supervisor; end a supervisee's candidacy or otherwise resolve the impasse.
If the Credentialing Coordinating Committee's decision is unsatisfactory to either party in the supervisory relationship, that party may appeal the decision through the formal appeals process, outlined in the document, “American Balint Society Policy Regarding the Right to Appeal Decisions Made by the Credentialing Coordinating Committee and the American Balint Society Council Concerning Credentialing and Supervision of Candidates as Credentialed Balint Leaders.”
All supervision sessions completed prior to a supervisory dispute will be honored and counted toward credentialing, should a supervisee continue in the credentialing process. Should the appeals process result in a candidate being terminated from the credentialing process while in supervision, fees paid for unused supervision sessions, minus the per candidate fee to the ABS will be refunded.
